The Graz Vigil

In 2020, 732 people keep watch over Graz - for one hour each at sunrise and sunset. And afterwards write down their thoughts and experiences they had during this silent hour in the sheltered platform on the Schlossberg Graz. The temporary spatial installation was created in close cooperation with the Faculty of Architecture (Institute of Design and Building Typology) of Graz University of Technology and in intensive examination of the site. The community art project "The Graz Vigil" by the Australian-Belgian choreographer Joanne Leighton not only gives the residents the opportunity to discover their city in a new and different way, but also to step out of everyday life for an hour to engage in a new and wonderful experience of their own surroundings. And in doing so, to find out whether it is actually the watchman looking at the performance of the city or the person in the city looking at the performance of the vigil.
