A City Celebrates a 90th Birthday
American composer Steve Reich (*3 October, 1936), one of the most influential musical thinkers of our time, is celebrating his 90th birthday. To mark this occasion, STUDIO PERCUSSION graz is realising an extraordinary cultural project: the artistic connection between Reich and the ensemble dates back to 1980, when Günter Meinhart toured together with the composer. Since then, Reich’s works have been an integral part of the internationally renowned ensemble’s repertoire.
Over the course of 24 hours, across 25 locations and 20 programme points, works by Steve Reich will be performed in different thematic contexts at selected sites throughout the city. Around 90 musicians and one extreme athlete will shape this unique event, which deliberately leaves the classical concert hall behind and turns the city itself into a stage. With GRAZ spielt STEVE REICH, a major cultural event takes shape, bringing together musical excellence, urban spaces and innovative performance formats – and pointing far beyond the boundaries of a traditional concert format.
