Everything must go
Netherlands
Acclaimed theatre maker Dries Verhoeven, who will represent the Netherlands at the Venice Biennale in 2026, presents his latest production Everything must go in Graz. The work explores various types of thieves and tricksters – from the “modern-day Robin Hood” who claims to steal from the rich, to the “hedonistic kleptomaniac” driven by the thrill of the act.
At the center of the performance is a woman in a Snow White costume, trapped in a glass booth designed to resemble a supermarket aisle. Her monologues are based on real-life testimonies and theoretical reflections. Surveillance cameras and live screens show her from multiple angles, caught in the tension between observer and observed. With this installation, Verhoeven examines what we do “when no one is watching” and questions moral categories such as guilt, shame, punishment, and reward. Everything must go holds up a painful mirror to our society, turning shoplifting into a sharp metaphor for late capitalism.
